Castiglione del Lago
The wonderful town of Castiglione del Lago lies on the western banks of the Trasimeno Lake. Its hills border on Tuscany and Val di Chiana. In the past it was a strategic route among Orvieto, Chiusi and Arezzo because of its proximity to the lake. So since the Roman time several rival cities contended the rule over Castiglione. That is the reason why the inhabitants have built a lot of fortifications, for example the astonishing “Rocca”. It is 30m high and it is built following the Umbrian tradition. Today it is still possible to admire suggestive vistas of Lake Trasimeno from its top. You can reach by ferry an island called Maggiore that is the biggest one in the Lake. So you will enjoy the wonderful view of the nearby places along the Trasimeno’s coasts.
You can’t miss a visit to Castiglione del Lago, Lake Trasimeno and its islands.
